About
Straw
bales have been used in the construction of homes and
buildings for centuries all over the world and for well
over a century here in the United States and for the
past several years has been undergoing an incredible
resurgence. This resurgence has not only been fueled
by an increasing concern for our environment but also
by the inherent benefits of this 'renewable waste product'
in providing tremendous energy savings in its insulation
value.
Design and construction techniques,
although varied, have remained somewhat consistent until
this recent growth of their use in both residential
and commercial building. Modern day building codes and
ordinances dictate that we have more sophisticated guidelines
for straw bale construction and those are being developed
currently
at all levels.
Straw bale homes have several advantages
over wood framed homes. They are stronger, more comfortable,
far more energy efficient and quiet.
The low environmental impact of building
straw bale homes also sets them apart from other typical
building systems. Straw bales are an annually renewable
'waste product' of normal farming operations.
Enough straw is produced every year
in northern California to meet all our residential needs.
Many of the straw bale homes built by early settlers
in Nebraska are still standing and being used, a testament
to the durability of 'straw bale construction.
The use of rice straw in residential
and commercial construction eliminates the need for
field burning and all negative environmental impacts
associated with it.
Experience the level of quiet and comfort
of a 'straw bale' home that you cannot find in conventional
framed homes. The thick walls provide excellent thermal
insulation. With well designed shading and ventilation,
the need for costly air-conditioning systems can be
greatly reduced and / or eliminated.
Straw bale structures are a perfect
fit for noisy urban areas. The thick walls provide superior
sound insulation. Shut the door and you shut out the
noise and the hustle and bustle of the outside world.
